A laundry sheet dissolves in the drum and disappears. What it leaves behind does not. It sits in your shirt collar for a full working day, in the sheets you sleep in, and in the pyjamas your kids wear. That is close enough to your skin that we did not want to grade our own homework.
So we sent Briters Fresh Linen to Dermatest, an independent dermatological institute in Munster, Germany, and asked them to test it on real people.
What Dermatest concluded
Thirty volunteers with different skin types took part. Each of them wore a patch with the product on the skin, under the supervision of dermatological specialists and according to international guidelines. Not one of them showed a relevant skin reaction in the test area.
"No relevant skin reactions were detected in the test area following a single product application. Therefore, from a clinical-dermatological point of view, the product was tolerated 'excellently' and can be declared as 'dermatologically tested'."

What an epicutaneous test actually is
An epicutaneous test is the same principle a dermatologist uses to find out what someone is allergic to. A small amount of the product is applied to the skin and covered, so it stays in contact with one spot instead of being rinsed away. That is a far harsher scenario than anything your laundry does, which is exactly the point: if a product is going to irritate skin, this is where it shows.
The test area is then examined by dermatologists. Redness, dryness or swelling are graded on a fixed scale. Products that provoke reactions do not receive a certificate and may not be advertised as dermatologically tested.
No animals were involved. The test was carried out on human volunteers who gave their informed consent, which is also the only route available: animal testing for products like this is prohibited in the European Union.
Who Dermatest is
Dermatest GmbH is an independent dermatological testing institute based in Munster, Germany. They are not a certificate shop and not part of our supply chain. They run the study, the dermatologists judge the result, and if the result is poor there is no certificate to buy.
Their studies run under an ISO 9001 quality system that is audited internally and monitored externally by TUV Rheinland, and subject data is handled under the GDPR in pseudonymised form.
What this says, and what it does not
We would rather be precise than impressive, so here is the honest reading of that certificate.
It says that under direct, covered skin contact, judged by dermatological specialists, Briters Fresh Linen did not irritate the skin of any of the 30 participants, and that the product may carry the words "dermatologically tested".
It does not say that the product is hypoallergenic, that no person on earth can ever react to it, or that it treats or prevents any skin condition. Any ingredient can be an allergen for someone. If you have a diagnosed skin condition or a known allergy, read the ingredient list and check with your doctor before switching.
